What kind of headline would you give Barry?

Some newspapers today put an asterisk on the main headline on Barry Bonds, as a dig to the new home run king. But most newspapers in the country played it straight, including the San Francisco Chronicle, which uncovered much of the Balco controversy.

For page one of our print edition, early on we had a nod to the controversy … the middle line of the headline said “A cloud of suspicion” but was changed to “A message from a legend” after Henry Aaron’s video message.

What kind of head? Why, a giant one of course!

*rimshot*

Semi-seriously, though, how about - BALCO Barry Breaks Record? How about no text at all — just a big, fat, giant asterisk?

Steroids are bad because of the damage they do to athletes bodies, not because of what they do to statistics. If steroids did not have the negative health effects that they have they would be considered another supplement to halp improve performance. It would be no different than lightweight bats, body armor, short fences and other substances that players use to gain an advantage on hitting homeruns. I don’t like Barry and how he represents the game and his dynamic to his team. BUt I have more pity for him and that health issues he will face than anger at him for “damaging a record”. It isn’t as if all 756 of his marks wer thanks to enhancement.

Bonds hits #756.

That’s it. No mention of it being a record. Let the reader decide for him or herself whether it is a record, and/or whether it should be asterisked.

The subhead would acknowledge Henry Aaron as having hit 755.

I like the simplicity of that last one. Great approach. Tells the truth. Period.
