Memories of long-departed newspapers

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

As you might imagine, we’ve received hundreds of complaints about recent changes to the PDTV, the weekly guide to television.

One caller today likened the Post-Dispatch — especially the new TV book —  to toilet paper. The St. Louis Star-Times was a good paper. The St. Louis Globe-Democrat was a good paper. But we’re toilet paper, he said.   (The Star-Times ceased publication in 1951, the Globe-Democrat in 1986.)

Well, you have to admit that the changes to the Sunday funnies and the TV guide haven’t exactly made them more user-friendly. All the full-page ads make it faster to read what passes for news, though.

It seems that you that you are telling us that the Post will go the way of the old papers if you don’t get your way. But the arrogant corporate enitity that Lee Enterprises has become will just let our complaints and bitches fall on deaf ears and do what the monpolistic corporate world does best, let the complaints go on long enough and you will do what you want.

Old Mary in Iowa probably justs laughs at our desire to have the newspaper (questionable) the way we like it and not her way. I realize that cost control is important but what you have done is to butcher the paper. We are your customers and provide the base for your advertisers. And I’m sure you won’t do anything unless the sales base go down and you begin to lose money.

#2 - I complain to the PD on a daily basis. They are so rude and arrogant they don’t even respond to my e-mails. I would love to see any other business get away with ignoring their paying subscribers. It is a such a disgrace the way they treat their customers. This is what happens to a company that has no competition. No wonder they are all socialists.

I usually don’t notice the changes to the paper because I don’t buy one anymore. I’d rather go without liberal, biased “journalism” and hope someone gets laid off without my quarters then actually take the time to read this rag.

Lew, you see where your adversarial comments are coming from. People who coud be, but aren’t your customers. You must face it your electronic edition is a total and unaduterated disaster. Whoever was involved in CREATING that abortion should be summarily FIRED.

In addition to continuing unsolved problems, you are adding new ones. The latest example of poor judgement was to cover the electronic front page with a Khols (sp) advertisement. Whoever accepted that ad should be FIRED. There is nothing like paying the sales manger and overide and the sales person a commission to alienatate your readers and your advertisers. That’s unbelievable. Do I know anything about selling newspaper space. I think so. Have you ever had a salesman sell 100 pages of advertising in 2 days at twice the column inch rate that would noramally be applied.

Don’t think I did that, Call Dave Huff, Ediitor of the Maui News (He can confirm it. I aaked and go a 50& commission. I donated my commission to the Salvation Army.

Ongoing problem is the Education Editor. Whoever hired her, if he/she is still with the PD should be FIRED, along with ther protege.

Another change! You’ve changed the TV book. I’ve seen it, bad idea. Even worse you have to be a subscriber to get it! I am not a subscriber but have purchased the Sunday paper for 24 years. Well I am no longer a customer. You may not miss me but if enough people quit buying the paper off the news stand you may notice it in the numbers. It’s all about the numbers….

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE give us back a halfway decent TV Guide!! What in the world is the reason for this disgraceful excuse for a guide. Especially with all the special Christmas programs - why did you pick this time to do this? Everyone I know is angry and I, myself, will probably cancel my subscription as soon as football is over….

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch was until recently an especially beautiful newspaper. I am interested in fine typography and have saved old pages of the Post as models of lovely and perfect integration of photography and text.

Though the Post is liberal, it prints dissenting views that would never make it into other papers. Post coverage of the Amendment 2 controversy was especially admirable.

I would love to see the Post-Dispatch restored to her former glory. I’ll do my part to see that happen. This Christmas I am giving year subscriptions as Christmas presents.
