Poor taste to show pregnant belly?

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

3 callers objected to the photograph atop today’s front page of the Post-Dispatch, which showed three hands touching a very pregnant belly.  The woman was being examined at the Community Birth Center in Columbia, and the photo accompanied the second of two stories on the legality — or lack thereof — of midwives in Missouri. (Part One ran Sunday.)”I don’t care to see a pregnant, naked belly,” said one man. “Is it really necessary to show that? Poor selection of pictures. Now I’ve got to explain that to my two granddaughters.”Another man and a woman expressed similar thoughts, calling the story and photo selection a matter of bad taste.

“a pregnant naked belly…?

Are you kidding me with this Victorian bullsh**? How much must someone hate the human body (including their own apparently) to actually take the time and complain about something this ridiculous?

I hope to God that the folks who complained were all over the age of 80…

That wasn’t as offensive to me as the ASPIRE36 Male Potency Ad on the Education Spotlight page on Monday about a Catholic, bible reading young lady. The PD is just an offensive paper on so many, many levels.

“Now I’ve got to explain that to my two granddaughters”??

I can handle that one for him: It’s a pregnant belly. You will see a lot of those in real life.

Stephanie Cordle’s photo of the pregnant mother did nothing but illustrate what the story was about. A pregnant belly is no more obscene than an overweight man’s shirtless beer gut — which also has appeared in print a time or two.

I don’t think a beer gut is quite comparable to a pregnant midsection; nor do I think either are offensive.

I agree with the first post- Victorian, self-loathing BS.

Thanks for the coverage on midwives. I went to Mizzou and there were some really interesting people working in the repro field…
