UPDATE: Upgrade done on STLtoday’s blogs

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

UPDATE: We’re done with the upgrade to STLtoday’s blogs. Thanks for your patience.

Earlier note:

Loyal readers of the STLtoday blogs, we’ve got some news for you. On Sunday, Jan. 13, we’ll be implementing an upgrade to our blog software.

What’s that mean for you? Two things, really. First, we won’t be able to post new items on any of our blogs that day, so be sure to come back Monday for updates on all our blogs. Second, you won’t be able to post any comments on any of our blogs that day.

This shouldn’t affect your ability to read our current blogs.

We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience.

The upgrade to our blog software will provide more personalization and customization on each of our blogs, pointing you to other relevant content on STLtoday and beyond. For you RSS fans, we’ll make it a lot easier to find RSS, Atom and Yahoo feeds. The upgrade will allow our bloggers to post other content too, such as embedded links to YouTube videos and whatnot.

Again, thank you for your patience on Sunday, Jan. 13.

But will the security code problem be fixed?

I’d like to suggest an upgrade on the quality of the bloggers. While there are a few that are worth reading, all too often the content is juvenile. Pop Mama comes immediately to mind. She’s dreadful.

Renee: I think the security code issues will be fixed. For those of you who are not registered on our site, you will still be required to enter a “security code” before posting blog comments. This is necessary to cut down on the amount of spam that automatic spambots post. However, if you have difficulty reading the security code, you’ll have the ability to click a button and display a new one.

Karen, we will certainly be doing ongoing training for our bloggers to help them learn more about the styles, techniques and needs of their blogs. As for the one you mentioned, different strokes for different folks, eh? She has a strong following, as do many of our other blogs.

Is there any page on stltoday.com which lists the most recent posts to each blog like the old blog zone page did? Especially for those of us who are not using RSS?

Kurt, The Editor’s Desk never posts. Is it possible to have an Editor’s Desk forum/blog that could act as the PD Ombudsman and we can post questions to the editors about content in the paper or lack of?

Kurt - Thanks for the response.

Karen - I really like Pop Mama. My only gripe is that she doesn’t post new subjects more often (and that goes for a couple other bloggers).

Carol has a good idea. I also think it would be nice to be able to post comments regarding the Letters to the Editor that actually made the print version of the paper and for the columns written by Bill McClellan and Sylvester Brown.

Renee (#1) - most often problems with the security code can be overcome by simply registering with our Member Center (see the Interact menu on the left.) If you continue to experience problems commenting in our blogs please e-mail sitehelp@stltoday.com and somebody (most likely myself) will try to assist you.

Kevin (#4) - Not at this time. In the old software all the blogs played in the same “sandbox” so there was one RSS feed that had the information you’re looking for, that was how the old page showed you what you were used to seeing. With this release they all have their own “sandbox” to play in, there is no combined RSS feed at this time. The “online-systems” group have it on our “to-do-list” to re-implement a cross blog RSS feed and as soon as we can get that done we can move to creating content boxes with what you are describing.

So far the security code problem seems to be fixed. It’s working great! Plus, the codes are so much easier to read now!

Could you please add the “next entry” and “previous entry” links back to each of the blog entries? I find it very frustrating to click a blog, then click an entry, and then click back to that blog’s main site to get to the next entry. Either you should post entire entries on the main site so you can scroll and read, or you should add the “next” and “previous” links so that the intermediate step is eliminated. Because the loading time for stltoday.com pages sometimes is quite long (no matter how fast DSL or T1 lines are), either of these would be beneficial to the reader.
