Dog show athletes?
The Westminster Kennel Club Annual Dog Show coverage in the Post-Dispatch appeared in the main news section this year, a switch from previous years when it appeared in the Sports section. Assistant Sports Editor Cameron Hollway on Monday night asked if we thought it belonged in main news. Without great deliberation or debate, the answer from news editors and page designers was yes. And tradition crumbled.
A photograph of the dog show appeared on Page A2 Tuesday and Wednesday. (Wednesday’s photo referred to Deb Peterson’s column, which led with the winner being a beagle from Belleville.)
One could argue that a dog show belongs in the features section. But our features sections are on specialized topics — Monday is Healthy & Fit, Wednesday is the Let’s Eat section, about food and recipes. Hardly homes for dog shows.
The main news section includes some lighter news (including the People column on A2.)
We like to be consistent in placing things in the paper. We want things to be easy for readers to find. If obits are at the back of the Metro section one day, they should be there everyday. Weather is on the back of Sports, etc. So, when we shift the location of something, we usally do so with more deliberation than went into the dog show move.
Anybody think we erred in moving it from Sports?

Dogs sell papers, Mr. P. You did the right thing.
