Would you eat this?

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

kosher2_opt.jpgA very angry reader called this morning to object to our Page One photo showing two butchers — apparently without gloves — preparing beef at Kohn’s Kosher Meat and Deli Restaurant.

How could we show such a disgusting, illegal scene? he asked. I admitted that I didn’t have an answer.

Turns out, butchering meat with bare hands might strike you as disgusting — but it doesn’t violate health codes. Georgina Gustin, the reporter who wrote today’s story, told me: “State code only requires food handlers to wear gloves if they’re coming into contact with prepared food, such as sandwiches or burgers, so butchers don’t have to wear gloves.”

Parker - you never have an answer for the horrible work done at the PD.

I’d still eat it. Actually, just hand over some of that beef and put me within 3 feet of a charcoal grill. After seeing some of the kids working at the local fast food chains, I can say most of us will eat just about anything - while not trying to think about how it was prepared. Besides, I’m not eating the beef raw.

Mr. Parker, I am about as safety conscious as anyone I know. Any germs put on the meat by the hands does not penetrate far enough to be of any concern. The “germs” will be killed in cooking. I like my steak extra rare. I have never had a problem. We kill our own meat around here and nobody wears gloves. They serve no useful purpose…with one exception…Use the gloves when skinning wild rabbits. That prevents the user from getting “rabbit fever”. It protects the eater of the rabbit from nothing. When the rabbit is cooked it is 100% safe for anyone.

Now, You couldn’t pay me enough to eat at a salad bar. I don’t know if the prepares used glove or not. That makes no difference. People walking by it breathes into it. You can get everything from a cold to tuberculous from eating a salad. No Thanks!

I would eat it. I’d be the one preparing it so any germs would be taken care of. I totally agree with johnh regarding salad bars…add buffet meals to that. YUCK, YUCK germ city! Which is why I don’t eat at restaurants that serve by buffet.
