Did we overplay Rezko to hurt Obama?

A caller today said we erred in putting the Rezko guilty verdict (”Rezko guilty verdict resonates”) at the top of today’s Post-Dispatch front page. That headline stretched across five columns.

She said the story about Obama’s historic candidacy (“Obama’s triumph lifts hopes of blacks”) should have led the paper. It ran as a one-column display, half of its headline appearing below the fold.

The day before, the front page was dominated by the story of Obama securing enough delegates to clinch the Democratic nomination. “America, this is our moment,” the lead headline quoted Obama – two lines across four columns at the top of the page.

Still, the caller said, today’s Obama story should have been at the top as well.

She said we ran the Rezko story at the top to diminish Obama. Even though Obama is not accused of any wrong-doing in matters related to the trial, some believe Rezko’s conviction will prove to be heavy political baggage.

(Seems like far greater baggage for Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, but the caller dismissed the importance of that. It was Obama we were out to tarnish, she said.)

Generally speaking “Birds of a feather flock together.” Did Hussein not buy his house from Rezko at a redueced Price. Did he not have Rezko as his fund raiser? Does he not come from the Chicago arena of politics. The past two governors are incarcerated. The current one is under federal investigation.

Not yet, and I do not believe you will. That would not be professional journalism.

Trust Obama when he says he can not and should not be defined by his associations or what is said by others. He is his own man.

Of course, I expect the same when someone compares McCain to a Bush third term.

I’m sorry johnh, who is Hussein? I didn’t see anyone by that name mentioned in the story…

I don’t think the story warranted banner placement, but it WAS probably a front page story, since it affects our neighboring state of Illinois.

Diminish him more. Repeat it over, and over again. And while you’re playing it, also mention that Obama openly opposes legislation protecting live aborted babies as he fears such a law might infringe on women’s rights or abortionists’ rights. Make me vomit, Barry Hussein.

Now Scott, Obama just doesn’t want his daughters’ “punished by a baby.” It would be much more convenient to them to just kill the little things.

I see JohnH has the feathers and chicken bones in his hands again. You Squaw! Offensive enough? I gots more if you do. This childish mangling of Obama’s name is getting old boys…Scott…I see you’ve jumped in to play too. Very unamerican. Study again what this country stands for. Of course you are pulling those headlines out to nail Obama’s rep. It’s sick and sad. Especially since you didn’t report the many decades of white males who cheated the peoples of Illinois. This good old boy corrupt crap isn’t new. You media types are like ET and NE nowadays. Level playing fields scare some of you. If you had dug a bit deeper, you would know the respect Obama has from both sides of the political aisle (as does Hillary). Those who listen to sound bites and want validation of their fears and stupidity will jump on your headlines as fact. It’ll all come out at trial. But some will still have their prejudices. My only comfort is the small-minded are largely impotent since their influence is small. This is not new, but it is more pervasive as media outlets swipe their material from subscription “news” sites.

Hey Amazed…are you going to go fight and relieve the women fighting your wars when the draft kicks in? There will be a draft if the repubs get in. I look forward to seeing you and your kids march off soon! We kill babies later in life here. Kids are dying to avenge the deaths of those who stole american capital and decent lives by selling bad paper to foreign countries. Yet you feel they shouldn’t be miffed by our thievery.

As an old mun once said, If men could get pregnant, abortion would be a sacrament. Many of you against it wouldn’t hesitate to use the procedure if you knocked up your mistress and you faced divorce costs. And you know it. It’s one of the few ways you can still control women, yet you support practices that kill older folks daily. Idiotos!
And yes, your headlines were timed to hurt Obama. These are not new corruptions.

You know how the Red Sox were like America’s underdog team and everyone loved them…and then they won the world series and their fans became pretentious, spoiled and just plain obnoxious, much like their counterparts in NY? I’m starting to get the same feeling about the Obama supporters. I’m really trying to like the guy (and I agree that the middle name attack is pretty freakin lame), but his supporters are getting out of hand! I didn’t buy the whole messiah complex thing…but now I’m starting to wonder.

Did the Post-Dispatch overplay Rezko to hurt Obama?

Not by a long shot.

For the most part, the coverage seemed to be relatively small stories several pages into the paper.

Now, let’s say Rezko had somehow been tied to George W. Bush in exactly the same manner. Then, I’d imagine, the Rezko affair(or Rezko-Bush Scandal, as I’d imaagine it would have become known…) would have been front page news for months and would have been held forth as a shining example of the “Republican Culture of Corruption” or some such nonsense.

So no, I don’t think you overplayed Rezko. I think you underplayed Rezko.
