Lipstick on a pig
Of all the issues in this presidential campaign, who would have thought putting “lipstick on a pig” would emerge as the latest battleground?
Slate.com has an interesting article on the origins and meaning of “lipstick on a pig.” It finds a 1926 quote about pigs and lipstick, but notes that actually putting the lipstick on the pig is a much newer concept.
The Post-Dispatch ran an AP story today in which Barack Obama insists he was referring to the similarity of John McCain’s and George W. Bush’s policies – and not Sarah Palin — when he used the saying. McCain’s camp says the comment was a sexist shot at Palin.
A number of news articles and broadcasts have pointed out that Obama and McCain both used “lipstick on a pig” references before Palin joined the GOP ticket — apparently using the argument that if it wasn’t sexist then, it isn’t sexist now. McCain once used it in reference to Hillary Clinton’s health care policy. The Dallas Morning News finds that Dick Cheney is a frequent user.
Palin joked at the GOP convention that the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull is lipstick. Did Palin’s definition of a hockey mom alter the landscape and tie lipstick references to her — even when they aren’t aimed specifically at her?

While we’re at it, can anyone out there correctly define the term “red herring.”
I am now confident that half of our nation is comprised of ignorant people. This is simply a camouflage to avoid discussing the real issues and if you can’t see that then you should surrender your voting card.
Palin Is Unknown
Unless she opens up to the press and public I do not see how we can consider someone that we know less about then the bag boy at our local grocery store? This is a situation that could place her in the position as commander in chief of the United States Of America. During the primaries the media kept asking if America was ready for a woman president. Well after raking Hillary over the coals for months and months the answer was by the millions yes. Like all the candidates she ran the gauntlet, faced the public and the press and by the end of the primaries we knew most everything about all of them.
We know very little about Sarah Palin!
How can this even be considered!
Charley Gibson has been granted an interview with strict guidelines… A Barbra Walters like interview. It has been said that he must first submit his questions to the McCain / Palin camp before he asks them.
Then write about something else.
Write about the non-discussion on issues we’re not having.
Compare Obama’s proposed tax plan as compared to McCain’s and tell us which one will have the most impact on the average St. Louis native.
Talk about universal health care, and what impact not having UHC has on area hospitals and doctors.
Discuss the recent offshore drilling discussions, each candidates view, and will this really help the people of the country in the long run.
The pig in a poke is in the news because you all don’t care anything else.
Sorry, should be “The pig in a poke is in the news because you all don’t write about anything else.”

A-FREAKING MEN!!
Economy in the toilet–healthcare costs spiraling out of countrol and MILLIONS of Americans without it…highest unemployment in 7 years…and the MEDIA is allowing this to frame political discussion?
I used to admire John McCain-but he has consistently proven himself to be low-brow, deceitful, nasty, divisive, and now just plain stupid with thise sort of thing. I am sure the pressure from the far right has driven him to these tactics…and you can bet that Karl Rove (Jabba the Hut of the GOP) has his filthy pig prints all over these distractions.
Gross. Tacky. Untruthful. Hypocritical. Destructive. McCain-Palin.
Ingrid you are right - ignorant people should not vote.
C A Wren - I guess we really won’t ever know anything about Michelle either.
When she was on The View, they too were given a list of topics off limits unlike Mrs. McCain. And it matters because the Obamas will also be a co-presidency like the Clintons. What is her real agenda?
I am still waiting to get to know Sen. Obama and Sen. Biden. Why haven’t the press sent hoards of reports out to get info on them?
I am quite sure that with the help of the press, we will know everything we need to know about Gov. Palin. However, I am concerned that we won’t know everything we need to know because the press refuses to dig deeply into Obama’s past and that we won’t know everything we need to know about him.

I just wanted to re-post what Shelley said in case anyone in the local media glossed over it. Shelley made some excellent recommendations.
Why in the world this has to be explained to the media is beyond me, but PLEASE keep the school yard he said she said drama to a minimum. I would love to see some local flavor on the details of each sides plans.
centrist — From the rev. Wright folly to this two often-quoted biographies, are you serious about not knowing who Obama is? The press has been “vetting” this guy for 20 months. There have been only about a MILLION news features and magazine profiles out on him, have you been asleep under a rock somewhere? As for “knowing” Joe Biden, he’s only been around since the early 70’s, appeared on every Sunday political talk show since the beginning of time and has run for pres. at least twice. So, your claim not to “know” either of these two is rather curious at best. Besides, if you don’t know Obama, then why do you state that his wife would be a co-president? Has he or his wife ever used the “two for the price of one” proclamation at any time? (Even in front of the partisan crowd at the Dem. convention?) All I smell here is fear.
If BO said this and meant it to be a reference to Palin he is an idiot. In its context I don’t think he meant it. I do think that the crowd interpreted it as a Palin jab, because why else laugh and respond that way?
BO should be winning this election by a landslide. Exposing himself and his campaign to distractions like this does not do him any good at all. I think at the very least it was a foolish choice of words.
In the end, all of this rubbish will not matter. The election will hinge on the debates. If either one of candidates stumbles in the debates it will be all over.
