Obama election, lousy economy top AP’s 2008 stories of the year

The election season culminating in Barack Obama’s victory was the top news story of 2008, according to U.S. editors and news directors voting in the Associated Press’ annual poll.
The massacre of 32 people at Virginia Tech University by a mentally disturbed student was the top story the previous year.

AP ’s ballot went out too early to include three strong contenders for the top 10: the scandal involving Gov. Rod Blagojevich, the auto bailout saga and the Bernard Madoff financial scam.
