Boston Globe revives Page One ads

The Boston Globe has added its name to the list of newpapers that will resume selling front-page ads.  An article on boston.com notes that the Globe previously had ads on Page One,  but not for decades.

Meanwhile, the New York Post reports — just days after the New York Times announced that it will sell front-page ads — that the Times is seeking $75,000 for weekday space and $100,000 for Sunday space.

Both articles note that most major papers already have been selling Page One ads.

A City Room blog post by the New York Times, in fact, reminded readers that it sold classified ad space on Page One for a century, until as recently as 2008:

“The little one-column ads seemed to trickle away over the years until they were simply banished from the front page when it was redesigned in March 2008. A bit of Times tradition died quietly at the time. But it came blazing back on Monday.”

The boston.com story says:

“Globe spokesman Bob Powers said today that the newspaper will start publishing front-page ads during the first quarter of this year, but is still working out the details, such as price, size, and location on the page.

“The news comes two days after The New York Times Co., which owns the Globe, said it would sell front-page advertising and published an ad across the bottom of its flagship paper, The New York Times.

“In recent years, some of the biggest US newspapers, including The Wall Street Journal and USA Today, have been running front-page as the industry battles revenue and circulation declines and readers migrate to the Internet.

“Powers said the Globe’s management team ‘continues to work closely’ with the parent company on formulating similar standards for front-page ads, but the decision to sell front-page ads in the Globe was made independently.

‘‘’Newspapers have to come up with more innovative offerings to advertisers and leverage the strength of the print product,’ Powers said. ‘It provides a premium position for advertisers.”’

I guess if that what is needed to help keep a newspaper in business,so let it be.Maybe a refocus effort of what a real newspaper supposed to be will help.Newspapers now are to dumb down and travia.Hard news and serious invesigative reported is needed.
