“In the 21st century can public-service journalism remain viable, relevant and accountable?”

That’s the title of a forum at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 11 at the Missouri History Museum, Lindell Boulevard and DeBaliviere Avenue.  It will be hosted by the Reynolds Journalism Institute at the Missouri School of Journalism.

Panelists are:

  • Gilbert Bailon, Post-Dispatch editorial page editor.
  • Pam Maples, Post-Dispatch managing editor.
  • Ray Hartmann, founder of the Riverfront Times and owner of St. Louis Magazine.
  • Donn Johnson, veteran broadcaster.
  • Bonnie Reece, executive director of Hope House, transitional services for the homeless.
  • Steve Ehlmann, St. Charles County Executive.
  • Bill Freivogel, director of the School of Journalism at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Leading the discussion will be Mike Fancher, a Reynolds Institute fellow and former executive editor of The Seattle Times.

Don’t even understand what the topic means exactly. And this really isnt on point, except news, but does anyone else find Channel 4 news unwatchable? Thinking of Larry Connors on his motorcycle, as he was in Post picture, makes me giggle uncontrollably; I dont think I’ll confuse him with Marlon Brando any time soon. And is that related to his recent sling on his arm? The question is did it fall over while he was sitting on it? My thought was he needs a motorcycle like a fish needs a bicycle. And I like to ride them, so that’s not it. And that nice Vicky Neuton, does anyone else get tired of her cutesy mugging for the camera. Do they tell her to be like that. I’m sure she’s very nice, but I dont confuse her with Karen Foss very much. All the women at Channel Five are great, but I always expect Mike Bush to be about to give the ball scores. He reads well, seems nice, dresses well, but has he ever done any actual interviews or journalism besides sports? I guess that’s not important. Anyhow, Channel 2 news always seems the best, most serious, most watchable and comfortable to me. I’m guessing that doesnt reflect the ratings exactly tho. Now since the Post and Channel 4 have some arrangement, I’m guessing the powers that be may take this post down? Hope not. My honey and I have just recently discovered stltoday blogs and how to use them, and we like them.

Journalism is and always will be viable and relevant. The problem is that it is not accountable. The PD FP, for example, regularly can’t get relevant stories reported but prints trivial ones. It regularly filters the news it wants us to read to promote their left-wing agenda. Even fired Eric Mink agrees as he discussed today on KMOX:

Eric Mink let go? OMG! Didn’t know him well, but I wonder if the owner or publisher, or whomever, thought about letting everyone else go and just keep Eric.

I don’t know what public-service journalism is, but if the Post-Dispatch let Eric Mink go and kept Deb Peterson and some other icons, it must be on the right track.

1. When Reporters were disallowed to post a news story without giving an a opinion that coinsides with the owner’s opinion. Journalism died. Propogandists is a more fitting name. That goes for both left and right.

2. Bill Freivogel, your assistant editor, in the past, only parroted what the N.Y.Times was saying. we know all the shortcomings of the family that owns the N.Y.Times. HIS OPINION MEANS ANYTHING? NOT TO ME.

3. Bill is as ridiculous a choice to to be the Journalism Dean, as a tumble bug would be to the Dean of the school of agriculture,

4. With the advent of modern technology, newspapers are becoming as worthless as teats on a boar hog.

5. I sat here earlier and talked to Chery Automotive, they are one of the most successful auto makers in the world.

Have you heard of them before? No. Why? You are too busy publishing “hand outs” to know what is happening in the rest of the world.

Public-service journalism will be with us so long
as there are hidden-agenda demagogues.

The seminal text in this field was written some
time ago by the Kanamet race–titled To Serve Man.

Yum-yum! Eat-’em-up!
