Boston Globe union reverses course, accepts cuts in pay, benefits
Here’s the top of the New York Times account of the union’s decision Monday night:
Employees at The Boston Globe voted Monday to accept a package of deep concessions on wages, benefits and job security six weeks after they rejected a similar package, capping a period of labor strife that included a threat by The New York Times Company to close the venerable newspaper.
But the 366-to-179 vote by members of the Boston Newspaper Guild may yet open another tumultuous chapter in The Globe’s history, possibly making way for significant layoffs and the sale of the paper.
Later in the article:
The company cut The Globe’s annual management expenses by $8 million, and it demanded that unions agree to $20 million a year in salary and benefit give-backs and the elimination of lifetime job guarantees that covered more than 400 employees. Though the company has not said much about plans for future cuts, many employees believe the elimination of job guarantees will mean widespread layoffs.
