What’s next for Lou Dobbs?

After Lou Dobbs‘ surprising resignation from CNN Wednesday, what’s next in his professional career?

The Washington Post’s Howard Kurtz  quotes a Fox News spokesman as saying the network hasn’t had discussions with Dobbs.  The Los Angeles Times’ political blog Top of the Ticket speculates about a run for political office. The self-proclaimed “Mr. Independent” had a resignation statement heavy with political overtones.

Here’s an excerpt from CNN’s transcript:

Over the past six months, it’s become increasingly clear that strong winds of change have begun buffeting this country and affecting all of us. And some leaders in media, politics and business have been urging me to go beyond the role here at CNN and to engage in constructive problem-solving, as well as to contribute positively to a better understanding of the great issues of our day. And to continue to do so in the most honest and direct language possible.

I’ve talked extensively with Jonathan Klein; Jon’s the president of CNN, and as a result of those talks, Jon and I have agreed to a release from my contract that will enable me to pursue new opportunities.

At this point, I’m considering a number of options and directions and I assure you I will let you know when I set my course.

I truly believe that the major issues of our time include the growth of our middle class, the creation of more jobs, health care, immigration policy, the environment, climate change, and our military involvement, of course, in Afghanistan and Iraq.

But each of those issues is in my opinion informed by our capacity to demonstrate strong resilience of our now weakened capitalist economy and demonstrate the political will to overcome the lack of true representation in Washington, D.C. I believe these to be profoundly critically important issues and I will continue to strive to deal honestly and straightforwardly with those issues in the future.

Unfortunately, these issues are now defined in the public arena by partisanship and ideology rather than by rigorous empirical thought and forthright analysis and discussion. I’ll be working diligently to change that as best I can. And, as for the important work of restoring inspiration to our great free society and our market economy, I will strive as well to be a leader in that national conversation.

I fully believe Dobbs will be hired by Fox News Channel. He was telling people the “way it is” while on CNN. FNC has been doing this all along and their rating shows it. Lou will be a perfect fit.

After Lou’s irresponsible coverage of the “birthers” this past summer, I think Cnn was waiting to unload him. Fox would be good for him because he can spew all of his opinions without anyone questioning him.

Thats great as long as he doesn’t imitate ‘MR. Extreme Wing nut’ Beck.
I love Lou as long as he keeps his persona.

Did anyone see that SouthPark episode last night. Parody at its best. Kill the Smurfs!

Can someone on the right please explain how Fox News’ ratings are much higher than MSNBC and CNN combined, yet they still constantly rail against the “mainstream media”?

I’m sorry but if you’re #1, then you are the mainstream.

Mr Dobbs is one of the few who can articulate financial news on the networks without screaming. I have grown to appreciate his independence on CNN and his willingness to criticize George W and the current president. He appeared to have guests representing both sides of the argument. Would Duh elaborate on the birthers issue please I must have missed it. I hope he does show up on Fox. He could replace Hannity.

Mr. Dobbs is a socialist of the worst order. If I am not mistaken he ranted on the public airwaves about how we were being invaded by Mexico. Lest you forget Mr. Dobbs Mexico is a socialist paradise supported by supposed American Corporations. Mr. Dobbs is upset because some of his slaves escaped paradise. If the Rio Grande were the Berlin Wall Mr. Dobbs would not hesitate to help people escape socialism. But in America he wants to keep people confined in a socialist work camp because his corporate supporters are gaining from it.

Birthers movement: Those who believe Obama should not be allowed to be President because they do not think he was actually born in the U.S. despite a proven and vetted record of birth in Hawaii.

What a shining beacon of truth, honesty, and integrity on the national corporate airwaves..

One of the few patriotic, constitution loving, capitalist, freedom loving Americans to be able to disseminate reality to the American masses..

I often marveled how he was able to stay with Cnn given their obvious bias to the New World Order and compromised corporate journalism,(and I use the term journalism, very loosly)!!

He was like the only guy with a flashlight in a cave when the lights went out!!

God bless him and his future endeavors and I hope to be able to hear him on another venue ASAP…

—First I’m hearing about this, but in reading the transcript, there is no doubt his ambition is national political office. Which one is the only question.

—I’d vote for him.

Mallarkey,

— Stop bogarting, you are losing all focus.

Dobbs would fit nicely within the Fox culture, however, his views are just a quieter version of Bill O’Reilly’s (with much more intelligence). O’Reilly wouldn’t allow the competition.
