Are Xbox 360s doomed to fail?
Assorted speculation abounds as to why Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 curls up and dies so easily — for some people, mere hours after purchase.
The video game console reportedly has an estimated failure rate of between 10 percent and 35 percent. Acceptable failure rates for high-tech hardware of any kind hover around 1 percent; higher than that and manufacturers traditionally have pulled their products from the shelves to preserve customer loyalty.
Microsoft instead merely extended its product warranty.
Now, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer newspaper’s website has a blog post by Jacob Metcalf allegedly explaining why Microsoft went that route. The post cites an unnamed source close to Xbox 360’s development who suggests the platform was doomed from the start.

I have yet to procure my own Xbox 360, and I still intend to, but I’m seriously wondering about this issue and whether or not extended warranties would be a good thing.
