‘Monopoly,’ ‘Yahtzee’ heading for consoles, phones
“Monopoly” is going digital.
Game publisher Electronic Arts says it will help develop digital versions of popular Hasbro board games such as the famous New Jersey-based “Monopoly” and release a few of them later this year for gaming consoles as well as mobile phones.
The EA-Hasbro partnership dates back to an agreement made last summer, but EA only now announced tentative release dates. Besides “Monopoly,” versions of “Trivial Pursuit,” “Risk” and “Yahtzee” are expected for mobile phones this spring.
To make this possible, EA will scale down some games so that they don’t require hours to play.
EA’s goal is to broaden the video game audience, which is saturated between ages 8 and 18. In the past year, “casual” games — those with simple rules and strategy — have boomed among people 18 and older, and are more appealing to the potential audience of women gamers as well.
The games are expected for all consoles. Though plans for each platform are not firm, “Littlest Pet Shop” and “Nerf N-Strike” are likely for Nintendo’s Wii and handheld DS systems. EA says it has agreements to create titles for Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable, too.
