Music makers can expect a boost from ‘Rock Band’ store

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

The incredibly popular “Rock Band” has received a tune up, and music makers will benefit probably more than gamers.

Developer Harmonix Music Systems and publisher MTV Games released a patch for “Rock Band” on Thursday that among other things adds a new music store to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions to streamline the preview and purchase of music tracks.

Now, instead of shopping through PlayStation Store and Xbox Live Marketplace, players can go to a menu option to find downloads without leaving the game.

The addition is expected to give music sales a major boost because now gamers can shop and play at the same time, adding songs as they think of them. Menu options include sorting titles in alphabetical order, by artist or difficulty level, genre or year. Gamers also can review three-song packs before buying.

Other tweaks from the update include:

* Faster downloads.

* Optimized microphone latency to reduce music lag.

* Bug fixes in the random set list.

* Better tonal voice recognition.

But Game Guy’s quite sure it’s the music store that’ll make you at-home howlers wail and loose a stream of royalty checks. “Rock Band” has sold more than 6 million songs since mid-March. (A version of the game is due out soon for Nintendo’s Wii, too.) Wanna bet it’ll sell at least that many again in another month?
