PlayStation Network security breached; Sony urges calm

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Electronics giant Sony Corp. is warning of a security breach of its PlayStation Network online gaming community, and some personal information stored by gamers at the site may have been altered as a result.

But the breach this morning, conducted through a PC, was minimal and security protections were back in place shortly afterward, Sony said.

The company has not announced how many user accounts were affected, but Sony says it is notifying those users directly.

“It is possible that the passwords of a small percentage of PlayStation Network users may have been changed,” says a notice at the PlayStation 3 website, “making it possible to view users’ personal information and/or use the ‘Wallet’ for the PlayStation Store.”

But because the network does not display full credit card numbers, Sony doubts any unauthorized card usage took place.

Nevertheless, Sony advises all PlayStation Network members to log in and check their accounts for good measure. Anyone who discovers problems or inconsistencies should contact customer service via e-mail immediately.
