Rich Uncle Pennybags is getting a digital makeover.

The mustached mascot of “Monopoly” will take his top hat and spats to the small screen when the famous real-estate related board game comes out in a video-game version later this year, Hasbro announced today.

The game maker says it’s teaming with Electronic Arts on the project for Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii consoles.

But don’t expect the same-old, same-old with this product. Instead of basing the electronic version on standard “Monopoly,” Hasbro and EA plan to duplicate the theme of “Monopoly Here & Now: The World Edition,” which sends Pennybags to the four corners of the Earth, not just the four corners of Atlantic City, N.J.

A board version of “Monopoly Here & Now” is expected to debut at the same time as the video game, Hasbro says.

And if you’re thinking this new video “Monopoly” threatens to recreate more of the 12-hour marathons common with the board version, relax; Hasbro promises faster gameplay and interactive mini-games to go along with America’s shrinking attention span. What’s more, players will be able to unlock varying game boards and player icons as they fill their “passport” during virtual world travel.

It’s not known yet though whether online play will be possible through Microsoft’s Xbox Live media service.
