Wii Fit is the shape of things to come

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Get ready to shell out some bucks so you can have a Fit.

Wii Fit, that is.

Game maker Nintendo says it will sell the next of its customized games for the Wii console in the United States for $89.99 when it debuts May 19. The cost isn’t for just the game, though; it includes the Wii Fit balance board accessory.

The game started selling in Japan late last year and has racked up about 1.5 million in sales since. Nintendo’s expecting to do at least as well here because more Wiis are available and demand is greater.

And so, as new ideas to use Wii come down the pike, expect to see more customized accessories follow.

On April 27, Nintendo will release Mario Kart Wii which utilizes a steering-wheel shaped peripheral to hold the Wii wand remote. Because its chief function is to make the remote easier to hold, the wheel serves just as a prop, and so doesn’t cost much — about $15.

The Wii Fit balance board, however, measures subtle shifts in weight, pressure and movement for realism during the 40-plus aerobics, strength and yoga exercises simulated in the game. The board is more complex than the soft pads used with most dance games.
