Mothers Against Drunk Driving has a bone to pick with the rating on “Grand Theft Auto IV.”

Because the game lets people drive drunk, the nonprofit group wants GTA’s rating bumped down from “Mature” to “Adults Only.”

In a statement Tuesday, MADD chided the Entertainment Software Ratings Board for letting this pass, saying, “Drunk driving is not a game, and it is not a joke.” The group also asked developer Rockstar Games to consider pulling the game and maybe tweaking its interface.

GTA players have an option to visit a bar and then drive drunk afterward. The more alcohol is consumed, the more difficult it is to control the vehicle. The player’s vision also is blurred and the screen images distorted while trying to drive.

Rockstar responded Wednesday by telling news services that while it took MADD’s mission seriously, “you can’t judge an entire film or a television program by a single scene.”

Neither organization has since responded to the other’s comments.

Geez! It’s a game! I don’t see them complaining about drinking in movies or on TV. They’re just the latest to blame the game industry for their poor parenting.

I’d rather have people do it in a game than in real life.
