NCAA Football 09 includes home field advantage

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

You know what’s most discouraging about the “reality” in video sports games?

Players don’t suffer from the jitters.

Because it’s hard enough for gamers to get their fingers and plays working just so when the game’s on the line; trying to control nervous nellies on the field would be just too much. Right?

Well, Electronic Arts will test that theory in “NCAA Football 09″ with something called “Home Field Advantage,” a feature that raises the difficulty level for gamers if they’re on the visiting team.

“Home Field Advantage” adds, among other things, “dynamic attendance” — fervent fans who pressure players on both sides and follow their favorite teams on the road. They jeer and cheer and they make players nervous, represented by squiggly lines on play routes.

And God help a home team that’s swooning. Fan attendance will fall off and the stadium will grow quiet.

Also added is an “ice the kicker” component, where opposing coaches can call timeout an instant before a game-breaking field goal.

“NCAA Football 09″ debuts July 15.
