New website shines some light on Alone in the Dark

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

There’s a new place to go for more details on the spooky dealings of Edward Carnby.

Game maker Atari has retooled the website for the survivor horror series “Alone in the Dark,” allowing everyone to shine a little light on the shady dealings and characters of this long-running franchise.

The retooled site, at www.centraldark.com, now examines vehicles, tools and weapons needed for puzzle-solving, and takes visitors in for brief visits of the special sites in New York’s Central Park that star in the game, such as Huddlestone Arch and Belvedere Castle.

Not only do “Dark” fans learn at the site about ingenious ways to get out of trouble, but also newbies can explore the lore and history of gaming’s oldest three-dimensional survival horror game.

The H.P. Lovecraft-inspired “Dark,” which debuted for PC in 1992, features investigator Carnby, the protagonist and principal gamer personna, as he fights off demons, dead people and other disturbing irritants while trying to investigate an apparent suicide. At least one gamer guide has rated “Dark” among the scariest games of its kind.

“Alone in the Dark” is rated “M” (mature) for having blood, gore, strong language and violence.
