Lawyers guilty of ignorance in Hot Coffee suit

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Interesting piece in The New York Times today about what has happened to the the civil lawsuit filed over sex scenes hiding inside “Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.” Apparently, the lawyers behind the suit are surprised there aren’t more claims from outraged players.

San AndreasSo far, just under 2,700 claims have been filed out of an estimated 21.5 million units sold since the game’s debut in 2004 — not exactly the kind of math that real outrage generates.

More outrageous though are the legal fees demanded by lawyers, amounting to $1.3 million to date, the Times says. This despite publisher Take-Two Interactive believing it needed to spend no more than $30,000 to compensate the aggrieved.

It seems then the real outrage lies with lawyers who wish they could have realized more fees. A federal judge in New York is expected to review the settlement for validity next week, and if lack of merit scuttles the settlement offer the case could go to trial.

And if that happens, the GTA imbroglio could become a real miscarriage of justice. Because, let’s face it folks, anyone who intentionally bought “Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas” expecting good, clean family fun probably also reads “Playboy” just for the articles.
