Use Tiger Woods’ secret weapon: Hank Haney

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09In the wake of Tiger Woods’ stunning performance last week at the U.S. Open, one wonders what he pulled from his bag of clubs to win.

Game publisher Electronic Arts suggests that secret weapon was Hank Haney.

Hank HaneyHaney, a Dallas-based golf coach, has gained a worldwide rep as a superior coach based on his shelves full of awards — including PGA teacher of the year — and a long association with Woods. Haney’s name comes up most often outside golfing circles when Woods wows, but now there’s another trumpet sounding away from the links.

It’s called “Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09,” the latest version of the best-selling golf series. This time, however, Haney’s lending his personality as an in-game “performance coach” to everyone other than Woods by assessing gamers’ performance during play in four skill levels: shooting accuracy, power, putting and the short game.

Haney’s help is dynamic in “PGA Tour 09″ because gamers’ skills are as well. He watches each approach, each stroke, assesses how gamers handle each hole, then assesses overall play round by round.

More about Haney’s role in “PGA Tour 09,” including a podcast of Haney explaining what brought him into the game, is available at the game’s website. The game is expected to debut for Xbox 360 on Aug. 26.
