PlayStation Network logoSony Corp. wants to improve your life with PlayStation 3 by introducing none other than “Life with PlayStation.”

The new interactive feature isn’t a game or alternative digital universe; it’s a stream of information providing mainly international, national and local news and weather forecasts for PlayStation Network’s estimated 9.8 million users. Other features will be added later, Sony says, although the company is vague about what they will be

Photos and maybe movie clips are likely, however.

“Life with PlayStation” was demonstrated Thursday by Sony Computer Entertainment president Kaz Hirai in Tokyo. A release date was not announced.

The way Sony explains it, PS3 users just point and click a spot on the revolving Earth display while background music — chosen by either the user or the system — plays off the PS3’s hard drive.

A similar service exists for Nintendo’s Wii, but Sony’s “Life” supposedly will feature better graphics and Web links that go directly to news stories. Nintendo offers only news and weather from content providers, but it also displays a “grab-and-turn” world globe on its weather channel.
