Sony repairs broken PlayStation 3 firmware
If you were waiting for Sony to clean up the mess it left from last week’s failed firmware update for PlayStation 3, the wait is over.
Sony has just released firmware upgrade 2.41, a revision of version 2.40 that turned several PS3s into shiny black bricks and forced Sony to withdraw distribution of 2.40 just hours after its release. Version 2.40 initially received good press because Sony promised it would include in-game access to PS3’s system controls and a trophy-award system based on accumulated gaming points.
This latest firmware upgrade merely patches the holes in 2.40 and is not distinctive beyond that. The upgrade to 2.41 is available now through PS3’s “System Update” feature on the start-up menu.
Sony’s not saying what caused the PS3s to crash while running 2.40 or how many were affected. The crashes apparently aren’t fatal though; comatose boxes can be fixed with a call to Sony’s customer support. A fee for repair may be attached though (it might be around three figures), so make your call with wallet in hand.
Or, the repair/replacement might not cost you a thing.
