The greatest game ever?

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Mario, of Super Mario BrosOh, puleeze! You’ve got to be joking. This is the greatest video game of all time?

The market research firm OnePoll seems to think so. It polled about 2,000 gamers, chiefly in Britain, to come up with the choice.

As for other titles, they polled this way:

2. Pac-Man
3. Tetris
4. The Sims
5. Sonic the Hedgehog
6. Space Invaders
7. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
8. Donkey Kong
9. Mario Kart 64
10. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
11. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
12. Wii Sports
13. Final Fantasy
14. Gran Turismo
15. Lemmings
16. Frogger
17. Pokemon Red, Blue and Green
18. Street Fighter II
19. Wii Play
20. Guitar Hero

Interesting, though, that the list doesn’t include “Halo 3,” which several irate e-mail writers assured Game Guy was the greatest thing since air conditioning. Or “Grand Theft Auto IV,” considered by GG’s critics as better than every other GTA before it. (For the record, GG didn’t think so.)

Well, just read the Telegraph article to learn why. In the meantime, give us your vote for the 10 best games ever made.

It is interesting to note, at least, that the first-person shooters that fly off of the shelf don’t seem to connect with gamers over a long period of time. People will buy Halo 3 now, but they probably won’t remember it fondly in a few years.

Wii Play? Honestly?

Absolutely, SMB should be on the list (although, perhaps not at #1). It’s the game that kick-started platform console gaming single-handidly.

Bert’s list, however, is pretty accurate, too. Ocarina is frequently up at the very, very top. Super Mario Galaxy, however, is nearly as highly rated.

Either way, in NO WAY should Halo (insert iteration here) be listed! While the first one really got online FPS games going, nearly all FPS games are simply copies of one another. Copy/paste different environments and different guns…print off new game.

Obviously this list is a joke, but if Game Guy is going to come down on Mario he needs to lay off on playing World of Warcraft for a while. I mean, Mario is more recognizable than Micky Mouse now.

agree about halo. i played halo3 almost obsessively for a few months and now i hardly touch the thing. although there are two very important FPS games missing from this list. first off, Goldeneye 007 for the N64 (sort of the father or FPS games on the console), and Half-Life for the PC, as a series, one of the greatest video games ever made. both of those games were “FPS” games but had so much more to them than just run, jump, and shoot. engaging story lines, ground-breaking (at the time) effects, first rate problem solving and each of them could be incredibly difficult to beat on their harder settings.

I find it interesting that there is not one PC title on the list. How about some love for Civilization series for strategy, or Wolfenstein 3D or Duke Nukem 3D as the grandaddies of the FPS? No mention of the king of MMORPG World of Warcraft? I guess this a console only poll.
Still, no Goldeneye, Metal Gear Solid, Zelda, or Call of Duty props?
Lets hear it for lies, damn lies, and statistics.

I’m also surprised to see no PC games on the list. Starcraft anyone? Where’s the love?

you know what’s great? i thought about mentioning the CIV series, but then i thought “eh, i’m probably the only one who played that game”. and i am currently addicted to the new one out on xbox… just watching Ghandi say to me “you will be crushed by the might of our massive armies” cracks me up every time…
