Register to vote using Xbox 360
David Sheets
St. Louis Post-Dispatch

A partnership between Microsoft Corp. and the nonprofit advocacy group known as Rock the Vote has produced a voter registration drive employing Xbox 360 consoles and the online gaming service Xbox Live.

The drive begins Monday, the same day as the start of the Democratic National Convention in Denver, and will allow Xbox Live subscribers to not only register, but also participate in presidential polls and voice their views to the presidential candidates and their campaigns.

“To realize our goal of registering 2 million young Americans by this fall, we need to go where young Americans are, and there’s no doubt in our minds that many are on Xbox 360 and Xbox Live,” said Heather Smith, executive director of Rock the Vote, in a published statement.

Details on how the voter registration interface would work on Xbox Live were not released, nor was it explained how each voter registration application would be validated.

The partnership extends beyond cyberspace. Microsoft said it also intends to have an Xbox presence on the floors of both Democratic and Republican conventions, in part to lobby for safe, family oriented gaming by promoting the “Family Settings” parental controls on Xbox.

Xbox Live has an estimated 12 million users.
