Today, there’s another reason to take a spin through Liberty City’s sandbox on PlayStation 3.

An update for “Grand Theft Auto IV” via PlayStation Network supports the awarding of trophies upon completing certain goals in the game. The trophies are associated with a feature in PSNet added this summer that recognizes meritorious achievement on four different levels: bronze, silver, gold and platinum.

The more trophies you win, the higher your recognized player rating on PSNet. This in-game update follows installation of PS3 firmware update 2.41, if you haven’t checked lately (Sony was up to No. 2.50, as of Oct. 18). To get the game update, just power up your PS3 with the GTA IV disc in the main drive.

Sony says the game update contains 51 trophies — for accomplishments such as blowing up vehicles, pulling off unusual stunts and finishing GTA IV in less than a day and a half. Those sound similar to skill sets on the list of GTA IV achievements in Xbox 360, so it’s likely the PS3 trophies are straight-across copied from Microsoft’s Xbox Achievement system.
