Storage problems likely with New Xbox Experience
When Microsoft retools Xbox Live and changes the online media-delivery network into the New Xbox Experience on Nov. 19, not everyone will immediately benefit.
Specifically, those folks with low storage or no storage and limited memory capacity on their Xbox 360s might not even see NXE, as it requires both merely to start up.
NXE is the new interface for the Xbox 360 system software. Whereas now the interface appears as a set of sliding blades upon startup, NXE is supposed to more closely resemble Windows Media Center available on similarly named versions of the Windows XP computer operating system and premium versions of Windows Vista.
NXE includes a Rolodex-like-display of system files and images, sort of like what’s found at Apple’s iTunes Music Store, and customizable avatars resembling the Miis found on the Nintendo’s Wii Channel interface.
But NXE requires a minimum of 128 megabytes of storage and a memory card that processes at least 256 megabytes of data at once. The low-cost Xbox 360 Core console, which Microsoft has allowed to sell at a deep discount lately, lacks both extensive memory and a hard drive.
What to do?
Well, over at the Xbox-intensive blog Major Nelson, a pseudonym site for Larry Hryb, director of programming for Xbox Live, there’s word that a storage solution is coming for Xbox Core owners who might be inconvenienced when trying to access the New Xbox Experience after Nov. 19
However, Major Nelson doesn’t go into details, saying only, “Be sure to check xbox.com for more details in the coming weeks.” And nothing’s coming out of Microsoft’s PR office acknowledging the potential problem.
With just over a month to go before the Xbox Live changeover, time’s running out for many Xbox 360 users to experience the New Experience. And if there’s a hardware upgrade involved, let’s hope Microsoft has the inventory and distribution system necessary to satisfy everyone. Because now, this close to the Christmas shopping season, is no time to give Xbox users yet another reason to become PlayStation 3 or Wii owners.

Yet another reason to become PS3 or Wii owners??? I haven’t found a single reason to buy one of the other consoles.
