‘Metal Gear’ on Xbox 360? Can’t tell from silly ad

A simple yet cryptic teaser page posted by game developer Konami on Friday has some gamers scratching their heads and excited at the same time

The page has a black background and in the center has an odd equation in green made up of the small letter “i” or inverted exclamation point, a plus sign, an exclamation point, an “equals” sign and what looks like the ubiquitous “power up” logo found on all game consoles. Beneath this equation is the phrase “A next Metal Gear is …”

Oh, and the logo keeps fading out and returning, replaced in between by the Konami logo.

What’s all this mean? Well, given that the page is translated from Japanese to English, and Web-generated translations of this sort don’t always work out well, nobody’s certain. Konami has been coy and isn’t returning media requests for an explanation.

Because the equation is in what appears to be Xbox green, speculation points to it being an announcement of an Xbox 360 version of “Metal Gear Solid” — to date a title exclusive to PlayStation. Another theory: “Metal Gear Acid” has been reworked for PlayStation Portable.

Regardless, it’s fun to watch the gaming media get its collective shorts in a knot over this. Kudos to the marketing wizards who thought this up and knew enough to generate maximum buzz by releasing it late on a Friday.

that is not a “power up” logo reserved for video games, it’s a symbol that means “on/off” used for all electronics (and some other machines). your PC has one, too. the solid line means power is connected, the open circle means the power loop is broken. having a vertical line and an open circle together indicates that the button switches power on and off
