Honolulu gaming-while-driving law vetoed
Reason prevails in Hawaii — for now.
The mayor of Honolulu recently vetoed a measure in his city intended to prohibit playing video games while driving, according to the Honolulu Star-Bulletin.
Lawmakers pressed the matter after a city bus driver was caught by passengers playing a handheld game console while driving his route last year. The proposed measure also prohibited text messaging while driving.
But Mayor Mufi Hannemann reiterated what Game Guy said a few weeks back: Police would not be able to enforce such a law. Officers cannot see what goes on inside a car below its windows without looking inside, and peeking in without cause could raise privacy concerns.
However, it’s much easier to see someone with a cell phone against their ear while driving.
Hannemann had supported a broader prohibition on all cell phone use in cars, but past attempts to press something like that at the city and state levels all failed.
His veto on this latest measure might fail, too: It had passed the Honolulu city council with enough votes to override opposition.
