Tell us if your Xbox 360 crashed after latest update

A number of blogs and forums are reporting that owners of Xbox 360s have experienced system crashes this week after installing an automatic dashboard update issued by Microsoft.

The update prompt, like most others, generally appears the first time Xbox is started up and warns that gamers can’t log onto the Xbox Live media service without it. Soon after the update, however, the dreaded “red ring of death” has appeared.

The problem began appearing the same week Microsoft discontinued a warranty for replacement of launch-day Xboxes suffering from chronic breakdowns. Now, it’ll cost owners between $99 and $119 to process repairs.

Let Game Guy know if you’re among the unlucky ones affected by this latest problem.

For the record, Game Guy installed the update a couple days ago and, so far, hasn’t experienced any problems. (He rolls with an Xbox 360 Elite.)

Yep, it bricked my console. In my phone conversations they are not yet willing to directly admit it is the fault of the update, but I am getting my system repaired for free and it is not under warranty. So I guess that is an implicit admittance of culpability.

This update killed my console as well, and I’ve been taking immaculate care of it ever since I bought it. I called them this morning and they were unwilling to help, but I suppose I’ll try calling again to suggest heavily that it happened because of the new update. I’ll cross my fingers.

I got two rings yesterday which at the xbox sites say is an overheating problem. Not likely since in a well vetilated area. Just out of my one year warranty too! NXE dashboard too with 20 Gb memory. Phone calls to XBox only went to India and advised me to report issue on line and send $99 to have issue corrected.

I purchased my XBOX ELITE in Nov 07. It has ran fine until last night, when I turned it on I was informed I need to update. As always I allowed this to happen and when it rebooted all I got was the THREE RINGS OF DEATH! The console is totally none responsive! I believe that the update is corrupt. If Microsoft does not fix this apparent mistake I am willing to be you will see a class action law suit. We need to get the word out about this. Thanks for allowing me to post.

My son’s unit died Wednesday. (6) phone calls & (2) emails to XBOX Customer Service have ended with the $100 repair offer. They are running from this issue as fast as possible, with no offer for responsibility. I would be interested in Class Action.

Yeah the update definitley made mine have a RRoD. I never had it freeze up at all and a couple hours after the mandatory update it started freezing. Unplugged it hoping that would solve the issue and the next time I turned it on I got the RRoD. Pretty bad when an update issued from Microsoft can cause this.

I ran the recent update and of course my xbox crashed. I have an elite that is under 1 year old and is still covered under warranty, but that’s not quite the point. What about the inconvenience? And what if my warranty ran out? Do they expect that I should pay because they don’t have the sense to test before publishing these updates? This is pitiful performance from a company where you would expect more. I am on my third xbox and if this one breaks that is it. As much as I love it, it is simply not worth the trouble. I’ll go to play station instead. It seems a much more stable platform. The worst part is that by now they must KNOW that they caused the problem and are still unwilling to admit it or apologize!!! I am starting to hate Microsoft.

My Story:
I recently took back my 6 month old xbox 360 to best buy (thank god for their inhouse insurance policy) because it had been booting really slow and not recognizing the HDD. So i downgraded to the arcade version since I had acquired an ebay hdd on the cheap! Brought it home and installed the new DL firmware. Within a few days it started locking up. Freezing after 10-20 minutes of play. I thought I got a bad one. Took that back the next weekend and grabbed another. Brought it home, updated it. BAM same deal. 10-20 minutes of play and it freezes requiring a reset. This was all done with and without the HDD installed so that is not the issue. I found this blog and a few others (aussie, gamespot, ie) that stated alot of folks are getting RROD’s. Now what are the odds of 2 BRAND NEW consoles freezing within the same week?

Frustrated,
Brian.
