Th Asahi Shimbun newspaper in Tokyo has reported that the Japanese game publisher will not to continue with plans to develop “Six Days in Fallujah,” a shooter title based on intense street fighting in that Iraqi city in November 2004.

Konami, together with developer Atomic Games, released a preview of the game earlier this month and soon was deluged with criticism from soldiers’ families and military groups in the United States and Canada that the game was insensitive and in poor taste.

The game’s depiction of street battles was based on diary entries of about 40 U.S. Marines who participated in the fighting, as well as declassified satellite photos, according to the Wall Street Journal. In the real engagement, at least 2,000 people died, many of them civilians.

At some points in the game, players are asked whether to shoot unarmed citizens.

The game was scheduled for release next year.
