New titles announced for World Cyber Games
New games have been announced for the lineup at this year’s World Cyber Games, scheduled for Nov. 11-15 in Chengdu, China.
WCG spokesmen say “FIFA 09,” “TrackMania Nations Forever,” “Carom3D” and “Red Stone” are joining the list with “Counter-Strike,” “Starcraft: Brood War,” “WarCraft III: The Frozen Throne,” “Guitar Hero World Tour” and “Virtua Fighter 5″ to try broadening the variety of competition.
Racers, shooters, fighters and footballers have been staples of the competition since its inception in 2001. But now, with the scope of gaming so much wider, WCG needs a wider range of titles to effectively highlight the skill sets of gamers, says Hyoung-Seok Kim, president and CEO of the World Cyber Games.
PC and Xbox 360 games are the focus, but mobile gaming has grown bigger and elbowed its way into the WCG itinerary for the first time last year. This time, the titles “Asphalt 4,” “Wise Star2″ and “Dungeon & Fighter” lead the mobile competition.
U.S. qualifying for WCG begins May 16-17 at the USA 2009 Invitational, scheduled for the Samsung Experience in New York. Samsung is a major WCG sponsor. The invitational allows top-level gamers to bypass the year-long and online and regional qualification process other gamers have used to reach WCG.
About 800 gamers from 78 countries are expected in China this fall. The WCG takes an Olympics-like approach by having special players venues during the event and convening in a different city each year. Last year’s WCG was held in Cologne, Germany. The United States last hosted the WCG in 2007 in Seattle.

Fifa09? Although Fifa is a nice solid football game, I still think Winning11 is the best out there. The WCG organizers must be going after player-base rather than gameplay.
