UPDATE: Penguin United forwarded this artist’s rendering (left) of the CrossFire Remote Pistol late Tuesday. Many thanks to the company for its prompt response.

Nintendo Wii’s motion-sensing capabilities give the console plenty of potential to be great for shooter titles, but so far it has fallen short of the mark. The “zappers,” “blasters” and “light guns” made as add-ons to the Wii wand controller have received lukewarm reviews for their effectiveness, leaving the door ajar for someone to come along and develop better equipment.

That better equipment might be just around the corner. Penguin United, a company from the Bay Area, says it’s ready to release the CrossFire Remote Pistol during E3 in Los Angeles, June 2-4. The CrossFire is being promoted as the first gun peripheral designed with the Wii wand’s motion-sensing capabilities already built in.

“Previous gun designs are bulky and just don’t work well,” said Penguin United president Richard Huang, in an announcement Monday. “The CrossFire will offer gamers all the benefits of the normal Wii remote, as well as providing a true ‘gun’ experience.”

CrossFire will have the “A” button repositioned for thumb access, the “B” button repositioned for the trigger finger and the “D” pad closer to the thumb than on a conventional remote. The device will include a vibration function and incorporated speakers, but also would work well as a plain-old controller substituting for the Wii wand in other games.

Penguin United did not include product images with its announcement; Game Guy hopes to add one to this post as soon as they become available.
