The U.S. Army’s digital recruiting tool is back with more firepower.

“America’s Army 3,” a PC-based recreation of what it’s like to experience Army training, goes on the market today and promises a more visually appealing experience than previous versions.

The game, which debuted in 2002 — on July 4, no less — tries to put players in the virtual shoes of recruits just learning the techniques, technology and career advancement inherent in Army life, and attempts to remain true to life by employing authentic rules of engagement and weaponry.

Above all, the game emphasizes Army values, which players are charged to master above everything else.

With Version 3, running on the Unreal Engine 3, players should see improved realism and effects, and more intricate team-based experiences. Scoring places more emphasis on personal courage and honor; an improved statistics display includes marksmanship, objectives captured and the ability to monitor where hits are made on other players; tactical action adheres more closely adhere to actual combat movement; and mission planners now can make strategic choices before missions.

Additionally, “America’s Army — The Graphic Novel,” a online publication based on the game, is available for free.

“America’s Army 3″ can be downloaded through Steam, among other distribution partners, or can be picked up at Army recruitment centers and ROTC detachments nationwide.
