Next month, Nintendo’s new “Wii Sports Resort” ought to become twice as fun.

The company announced it plans to include two MotionPlus expansion devices for the Wii wand controller in the game bundle, instead of just one. The double-device limited-edition packs go on sale starting Oct. 12, and will last only as long as retailers continue receiving shipments. Nintendo hasn’t said how long that will be.

“Wii Sports Resort,” introduced in North America in July, builds on the Wii Series concept of games made popular with “Wii Play” and “Wii Sports,” the latter of which is bundled for free with each console. But “Sports Resort” was designed with MotionPlus in mind; in fact, it cannot be played without first plugging MotionPlus into the base of the wand controller.

Cammie Dunaway, a Nintendo vice president, said in a statement that putting two MotionPlus devices in the game makes sense for a title best enjoyed with more than one player at the controls.

“It instantly gets multiple members of the household engaged in playing as soon as the package is opened,” she said.

Dunaway didn’t say however why Nintendo failed to employ that logic in the first place.

Nintendo intends to sell the bundles for $59.99. Currently, “Wii Sports Resort” with a single MotionPlus unit sells for $49.99, and additional units cost $19.99 each.

If Nintendo did this right off the bat it would’ve done well, but then they wouldn’t have a nice bundle to show off right before the holiday season. Nintendo’s marketing is pretty good, although I don’t care much for Carrie, but what they should do more of is grassroots promotions, the way Microsoft does. This online promotion, check the link for info, is the kind of thing Nintendo should do for individual games. When Microsoft does it, it makes their mediocre games sell like hotcakes.
