‘Project Runway’ could be bigger on Wii than on TV
Next year, the Wii Balance Board turns into a catwalk.
Atari and The Weinstein Co. have announced they’re combining forces to bring “Project Runway” to the Nintendo console by spring. The popular fashion oriented reality program on Lifetime pits budding designers against each other in a quest for financial help and publicity in starting their own design lines.
On Wii, the competition shouldn’t be so cutthroat — the game’s emphasis will be on creativity, Harvey Weinstein told Variety’s website. However, there’s talk of players being able to photograph and document their creations in the game — maybe even share those creations online — so there’s at least potential for cutthroat competition.
And of course, the Wii Balance Board occupies the spotlight: Players will “walk” on the board during the big fashion show finale, being careful not to drag their hemlines over the power button we suppose.
The show pulls in about 4 million viewers weekly, some of whom surely are guys who just want to gape at hostess Heidi Klum. She’ll figure prominently — if you’ll pardon the expression — in the game version, too.
But if Atari lays a firm foundation for this “Runway,” the game could serve as a launching pad for all those fashionista wannabes out there who swoon at the thought of seeing their clothing concepts appearing on real models. Who knows? “Project Runway” for Wii may turn out to be the launching pad for an authentic designer.
All it takes is one, and the TV show could slip into the game’s shadow.
