Why should ‘Spore’ be a movie? Give us your ideas
The game has plenty of characters but no plot — in fact, there isn’t even a story line to go with it.
Nevertheless, 20th Century Fox has obtained the rights to the 2008 god-game “Spore” and threatens to produce a feature-length film with that title based on … well, who knows?
And according to the Hollywood Reporter, the “Spore” project already has a big name attached — Chris Wedge, who directed the 2002 Paleolithic tour de force “Ice Age.”
“Spore” the game lets players direct life forms of their own creation from single-cell stage all the way up to sentient, space-traveling social creature. Development is tracked and cataloged with a “Sporepedia” containing a comprehensive archive of each creature and its development.
But there’s no story to “Spore,” no good guy, no bad guy, no boy-meets-girl interplay, no vampires and no zombies (at least not in the conventional sense). It’s hard most times to know even what one critter says to another.
This might be a problem for screenwriters who lack imagination and creativity, but in the hands of a true Hollywood professional … yeah, it still could be a problem. Witness the Oscar haul from such console-to-theater creations as “BloodRayne” or “Max Payne” or the dozen turns “Pokemon” took on the big screen.
(Any of you who stopped to look that up isn’t been paying attention.)
Well, Game Guy trusts his readers to have more creativity than a whole studio full of Hollywood types, so he’s asking them what they think the “Spore” movie’s story should be. Just write your ideas here, and Game Guy will forward them to 20th Century Fox — and maybe you’ll see your idea up on the big screen.
It couldn’t be much worse than what we’ve seen out of Hollywood already.
