Cover art revealed for ‘Star Trek Online’
Little by little, we’re learning about “Star Trek Online,” the MMORPG destined to consume every true Trekkie and create millions of new ones.
We know now the release date is Feb. 2, and that players will have almost two dozen ship bridge interiors to choose from, including all the stage setups for the starship Enterprise.
We know now also the setting will be the 25th century, 22 years after the supernova that melts the Romulan world in J.J. Abrams’ reimagined “Star Trek” movie from this summer, although elements of the “original” Trek will be in place as well.
And now we know what the game’s box art will be, thanks to an e-mail to Game Guy from distributor Atari and developer Cryptic Studios. The tone of Abrams’ “Trek” is strong in the image, but Cryptic promises that the game includes a “Spore”-like quality, in that players can customize every element and create new alien species.
So, your “Star Trek Online” may look entirely different from someone else’s “Star Trek Online.”
As Capt. Kirk said in the 1994 “Generations” movie, “Sounds like fun.”

Cryptic has unveiled a new type of ship that will feature in its upcoming MMO, Star Trek Online. Then again, so long as the game is fulfilling our deepest Star Trek desires, we suppose it’s all a moot point. Plus, we’re sure many of you are just going to buy this on Steam or some similar magical online store.
