St. Louis Public board votes tonight on closing schools
St. Louis should know tonight which schools will close in the city school district.
The three-member special administrative board that runs the St. Louis Public Schools will vote tonight on a proposal to close 17 of the district’s 85 schools, 14 of them at the end of this school year.
It is expected that the board will pass the proposal with limited discussion; the meeting agenda lists it as a “consent” item — part of the “routine operational contracts of the district.”
Consultants recommended in January that the district close 29 schools.
But just two weeks ago, new Superintendent Kelvin Adams proposed closing just 17 schools. His plan also hinted at a transformation of the district, including possibly building two new elementary schools.
The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. tonight at the Gateway schools complex.
