The Normandy School District Board of Education has elected Sheila Grimes Williams as its newest board member, and Curt R. Green to serve as principal of Normandy High School.

Williams fills the vacancy from Patricia Madison’s resignation. She will serve until the April 2010 election. The district said Williams was elected by the board from a pool of seven candidates.

Green has been an administrator for 10 years in middle and high schools, most recently in Atlanta and Baton Rouge, La.

Green will be in the library at Normandy High School, 6701 St. Charles Rock Rd., at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, June 27th, to meet the public. He is replacing Carl Hudson, who is filling in as principal at Garfield Elementary School.

District press releases continue below, first on Williams:

Williams brings to the board over 40 years experience in the field of education. She retired from the Normandy School District in 2008 after serving as its executive director of school programs. Williams has also served as training academy director at the Efficacy Institute in Waltham, MA and has held various positions in the St. Louis Public Schools including executive director, staff development supervisor, supervisor of the Effective Schools Program, instructional coordinator, reading and mathematics specialist and elementary teacher. Williams has also been an adjunct professor at St. Louis University and Harris Stowe State College, and an evaluator with the Missouri School Improvement Program (MSIP) and the North Central Accreditation Committee.

Williams holds a master’s degree in mathematics education from Webster University and a bachelor’s degree in education from Harris Teachers College.

And then on Green:

Green brings to Normandy High School more than 10 years of middle and high school administrative experience as an instructional leader. Most recently, he served in the Atlanta Public Schools as the founding principal of the B.E.S.T. Academy at Benjamin S. Carson. The B.E.S.T. Academy is an all boys’ school serving sixth through 12th grades. Prior to joining the Atlanta Public Schools, Green served two years as the founding principal of Capitol Pre-College Academy for Boys in the East Baton Rouge Parish School System in Baton Rouge, LA. As principal of Capitol Pre-College Academy, he partnered with Southern University and the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund/Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to convert a comprehensive high school into two, small college preparatory gender-based academies. Under his direction, students were exposed to a college preparatory curriculum including advanced placement and dual-enrollment college level courses.

Green is a graduate of Louisiana State University where he earned a bachelor of general studies degree with an emphasis in social sciences. He has two master’s degrees from the University of Alaska-Anchorage in teaching secondary social studies and public school administration (K-12). Currently, Green is pursing a doctoral degree at St. John’s University as a member of the Urban CARES cohort focusing his research on educating inner city males in public education.
