Obama and Edwards unite on health care
This is interesting. At a campaign stop in Raleigh, N.C., today, U.S. Barack Obama, the presumptive Democratic nominee for president, made a surprise announcement. He’s going to work with Elizabeth Edwards on health care. Yes. Elizabeth Edwards, wife of former Sen. and one-time rival John Edwards. Yes, Elizabeth Edwards, who did not endorse the Illinois senator when her husband did. Yes, Elizabeth Edwards, who criticized Obama’s health care plan (and U.S. Sen. John McCain’s, too; he’s the presumptive Republican nominee) and embraced the plan offered by Sen. Hillary Clinton, the long-time health care maven.
I’d like to see Ms. Edwards steer Obama away from incentives for buying health insurance and toward single-payer health care.
What do you think of Obama’s health care plan? Do you think Ms. Edwards can help shape Obama’s health care policy into something that would help America and Americans? What would that be?

Unfortunately, Senator Obama doesn’t have a clue about health care or much of anything else, and John Edwards would just like to be Vice President.
Americans have waited a long time. A single payer national health care system is the best, the only, system for this country. Like Roosevelt’s social security program, it will be landmark legislation. Both Obama and Elizabeth Edwards will be long remembered for this even if they do nothing else.
My mailbox is filled daily with junk mail from insurance companies. I don’t think it is because they are worried about my health. Just think of the millions of dollars the plan will save. Any other plan is faulty in comparison.
To avoid welfare, perhaps insurance companies could retrain their employees for environmental projects. There are lots of them.

Sorry, but this is nothing but a sick political move to capitalize on the illness of Mrs.Edwards. I am sorry she is sick, but having cancer does not make you an expert on how to fix the largest segment of our economy. This is an attempt to get Edwards voters in the South to vote for Obama. Obama and the rest of the Dems are simply employing a new wrinkle this election. Usually, they lie to seniors that the Republicans are going to cut their social security. Dick Gephardt was the master at this. Now, they are promising something they know this country cannot afford. What is next, free gas? I am not going to go into the many well documented accounts of why socialized medicine will not work. I think if they want to do something productive, they should come up with a catastrophic plan that would put a net under those who, like Mrs. Edwards get sick, but unlike her are not married to lawyers who have wrecked our health care system by suing doctors out of business. Retrain insurance clerks to work on environmental projects? Do you people really believe that? Those people will all get hired by the government which will need new people who know how to say “sorry, request denied”. Everyone with insurance will have less if Obama gets his way. Let me be clear, SOCIALISTS support socialized health care.
Why do people think the government is the best solution for health care? We can’t even give our soldiers proper care through the VA, yet we want to expand that to include 300 million people!? Just ask anyone going to the va about wait times, paperwork and the like, my guess is you won’t get a positive response.
And to hold Social Security up as an example is silly — aren’t we always being told it’s broke, and that we need to radically fix it.
Finally, what in the world make Mrs. Edwards remotely capable of gettign involved in this. Her husband suing the pants off doctors for millions certainly doesn’t.
My wife and I, both retired, buy a very comprehensive Medicare “plan D” supplement for $59 each per month. Anyone who pays more is getting snookered. I don’t believe Mr. Obama has any plan that won’t ruin us with increased taxation.
Oh yeah, lets let the government run healthcare, they do such a good job of running everything else. Hell they cant even run a cafeteria! Canada is kicking people out of the country rather than treat them, after they had been recruited to the country to work and had been promised coverage. What will those in favor of government run health care say when your government declines to cover you because you cost too much?
I find it interesting that Obama chose Mrs Edwards, who repeatedly said that she didn’t care for Obama’s plan and preferred Clinton’s. Perhaps this is a way to reach out to Clinton supporters? Based on the comments here and elsewhere, I still find it hard to believe that there is a big enough mandate for universal health care.
Given the mess that things are in financially, this is something that won’t happen overnight. It may take a generation before anything resembling true reform takes hold. W has made such a mess out of the government that most people don’t trust it to run anything, much less health care.
Our health care system is a bloated, wasteful mess that is the most expensive in the world, yet leaves out a huge swath of its citizens. I wish Obama and Mrs Edwards well- they will need to build a bigger case to overcome the entrenched system that we have now.
sick and vicious and ilk, Mrs. Edwards’s support is logical and helpful.
Americans cannot expect healthcare coverage under Slick Johnny Mc’s “let’s let only the healthy and wealthy have health insurance” plan. What we get from McCain is more Bush and even more Bush, where the incentives for employer based plans are removed, and workers “get” a “tax” credit, not healthcare.
BUT, for the already uninsured which total some 45,000,000, there is another opportunity to get nothing from Bush, McCain and the GOP.
If you are lucky enough to have a job, your employer will drop its coverage under Slick Johnny Mc’s plan (gee, more profits for business, who woulda guessed it?) and you have no health insurance, and no access to Medicare or Medicaid because you are working, ad the income guidelines have all been upped by the GOP legislator(which already have health insurance).
Nobody’s talking about the government providing the actual care, so the “socialist medicine” drivel of the far right wing neocon Brown Shirt weblog echochambering yobbo yappers is another lie but, what can you expect from a Bush Republican? No truth, devotion to a fictional universe, and constant lies.
Well spoken, Comrade. I sure hope the socialists cover anger management.
Two things about government run health insurance
1) It is not necessarily cheaper health insurance
2) It is not necessarily better health insurance
Another issue they fail to address is that just because you have health insurance does not mean you have access to healthcare. Putting the government in the middle of all that does not change one thing. You can have all the insurance in the world, if you still have to drive 3 hours to get to the doctors and specialists and facilities then what good does it do.
But at least liberals will feel better knowing you have Obamacare insurance!
