Obama getting shown up in ‘Show Me State’?

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

McCain supporterThe hand wringing has reached a fever pitch (is that even possible?) at Talking Points Memo, the liberal political blog and website.

TPM solicited thoughts by Missouri readers about recent polls which show John McCain with a healthy lead in the Show Me state — and was puzzled when it learned McCain had a much heavier TV ad presence.

TPM then found and quoted Jo Mannies’ report on STLtoday.com’s Political Fix that McCain is outspending Obama 2 to 1 on TV in Missouri.

Now the worry machine has really racheted up, and commentary has turned to how summer is the time to strike, not sit back, and the D’s seem to be playing not to lose (a sure recipe for losing) while bolder and savvier R’s are plotting to win.

True? Any of it? Some of it? All of it?

Let’s not just hear from the Obama Haters who have become denizens of this blog — how about some other points of view, analysts and observers, not just strident ideologues.

Eddie –
Obama Haters? …strident ideologues? Go back and re-write that paragraph.

If you want Obama supporters, ask for Obama supporters. Don’t label legitimate opponents with legitimate viewpoints as “Haters”

Have you seen John McCain’s climate change ad? The campaign points out that Mr. McCain bucked the president in 2003 in declaring climate change a great concern with the largely symbolic Climate Stewardship Act. Okay…so we can draw from this that the Reps aren’t running a complete idiot this time. Then the spot cuts away to show a profile shot of McCain (showing only the right side of his face…nice trick, looking presidential and invulnerable to health concerns) followed by his “my friends”-esque, almost fatherly statement, “I approve this message”

I’ve seen this ad broadcast nearly a dozen times during the Cardinal baseball games broadcast in Columbia, MO. If he’s trying to win over some of the liberal-thinkers here with that paltry piece, there’s another thing coming; you don’t think people here have more on their minds? Besides, the cap-and-trades of the aforementioned Act mean nothing to the average person…just a way for large polluters to unscrupulously shift their carbon footprints around. How about an ad supporting public transit? Wait…forgot about taxes. Non-motorized transit? That’s tax free and good for you.

I’m sorry, but I’ll have to disagree with the fretting Talking Points. There are all types of bangs with which to begin the national election season; Mr McCain already made his a war-spirited mushroom cloud long before this lame attempt at image repair.

Wow, Eddie, give me a break! There are no more strident ideologues than people like D. Walker, who can find a way to excuse every revelation about Obama, and who insist he is beyond party and ideology even though his voting record betrays views far outside the American center.

As for myself, I have no personal animus toward Mr. Obama, and take offense at your characterization of those of my stripe as “Obama Haters.” Were there a Republican candidate who sought to take large sectors of the economy and place them under theocratic control to advance the role of “God’s Kingdom”, who sought to impose his peculiar religious mores upon society by means of legislation, and who planned to greatly increase taxes to fund works of the church, I would take equal offense.

We’re not Obama haters. We’re Obama fearers.

I didn’t hate Jimmy Carter either, but I’ve felt a lot firmer handshake from old ladies.

I don’t know how the ads will play out. I do know that Obama has started a “Unite for Change” campaign which is trying to get citizens involved and “owning” the campaign. He wants people to become informed and do more than just vote - he wants a grass roots campaign. Saturday, June 28 was the official kick-off of Obama/Unite for Change house meetings, with over 4000 house meetings scheduled.
And Nick, I don’t understand your comment - I have not heard Obama stating any of the things you said as part of his plan. In fact, those goals sound like the George W. Bush plan for America and reflect what he has done the past seven and a half years. Do I take it you did not vote for him? Please tell where you have heard these intentions relating to Obama?

“Herzog says she is concerned Obama would raise taxes if he were to be elected.”

Ms. Herzog must be a millionaire!

Gee, nice back-door attack on McCain supporters, Eddie. What next, are you going to delete their comments so that this can be a pro-Obama blog just like the Post-Dispatch? And again I see you were visiting another lefty site. Have you ever visited a conservative or or non-partisan site or do you only check out the lefties to get your talking points from?

There was a Rasmussem poll and article a few months ago showing McCain in a comfortable lead in MO, and as we know as Missouri goes, so goes the country, yet Steve Parker refused to acknowedge the poll as he was concerned abou the source. I had to laugh. The good ole PD - news by ommission. What a great paper.

Here is another idea for a great discussion. Gen. Wesley Clark’s comments on Face the Nation yesterday about McCain’s service. And this from a guy who supported Kerry - the guy who showed up at the Dem convention saying, “I’m Senator Kerry and I’m reporting for duty.” I almost fell off my chair and knew the election was over right there.

First off Eddie, let me explain the difference between Dems and Reps. I for one do not hate Sen. Obama in any way shape or form. I think he is a very likable man. I have done extensive research on the man unlike the PD and have serious concerns about him being our next president. This is compared to those Democrats at the PD who truly hate President Bush.

What I do hate, however, is the lamestream media not reporting all the information necessary to help the public make intelligent decision about the candidates. The media’s desire for Sen. Obama to be president is over-whelming and the bias is clearly obvious.

I happen to be neutral on who wins in Nov. unless McCain picks Romney for VP.
But when I read an editorial writer calling people who don’t support Obama for president Obama haters and doesn’t want them to contribute to his blog, I find that extremely disturbing, but from the PD, not surprising.

Why are so many liberals like Andrew jealous of millionaires?

According to CNNMoney.com (3/29/06) there were 8.9 million American households with a net worth of over $1 million in 2005. Most of them live in California, Illinois and New York state, so most are probably Democrats.

Their average net worth, excluding main residence, was $2.2 million, and over $1.4 million was in investable assets, meaning that many were living pretty modestly and saving a bunch, but their overall debt was $165,000.

My humble household was one of the 8.9 million, and it got there by half a century of hard work and steady saving. At 73, I work part-time, maintain my own home, yard, vehicles and appliances, fund a Roth IRA, have no debt, and vote Republican.

“Why are so many liberals like Andrew jealous of millionaires?”

I think you missed the point.
Obama may increases taxes, but that burden would be felt on the top 1% of the country. Betting that she isn’t a millionaire, I was making light at the fact that she would be concerned about an increased tax burden for herself.

Thanks for you financial update.
