McCain-Obama debate blog live!
Things should be getting underway in Oxford, Mississippi shortly.
You should know that writers Kevin Horrigan, Jamie Riley, and I will be commenting during the debate, while writers Eric Mink, John Carlton and Eddie Roth will weigh in from home.
Alex Mayer, our intrepid summer intern, will man his keyboard at the College of William & Mary this evening. We hope that he will join the conversation.
Engage and post a comment _ that’s what the editorial board will do as the debate unfolds. We invite you to add your opinions.

Gilbert Bailon has been editor of the P-D editorial pages since November 2007. Previously, he worked as a reporter, editor and executive editor for The Dallas Morning News and its daily Spanish-language newspaper, Al Dia. He still harbors a passion for all things Tex-Mex: food, music, language, boots and border culture. And yes he has found some of that in the Midwest.
Greetings from Flad Ave. in South St. Louis, sitting in my recliner waiting for the debate to begin. You have to admire the candidates endurance. Man o Man. After a 14 month sprint, and the Wall Street crisis, and Sen. McCain’s suggestion to delay the debate (which I thought was goofy) now they have to crisply make their case.
Howard Fineman of Newsweek says it’s “always 4th and long with John McCain.”
Here are the debate rules:

Two minute answers followed by 5 mins of discussion. 90 mins in all.
Let’s do this.
Three posts in 5 minutes…. Eddie is in the house. On Flad. I’m tucked into the home office in U. City looking for the best online site to watch things.
Whoa…Kathleen Parker, who writes for the conservative website National Review Online (and is one of the syndicated conservative columnists we carry on Thursday’s P-D commentary page) has filed a column saying Sarah Palin should do McCain a favor and resign from the ticket.

Good to have Alex Mayer back on The Platform. He also will be twittering the debate. You can follow him here, but also there at http://twitter.com/Alex_Mayer.
I do like Jim Lehrer. The last of the old style, serious guys. Generally solid.
Is it just me, or does Barack Obama have more grey hair than when he began his run for president?
Good use of Ike quote by Lehrer. Neither candidate really responded in their direct answer. Barack Obama seemed stiff, scripted and wonky. McCain a little more personal, but seems tired.
