Freedom of speech *UPDATE*

In an interesting update to the post I wrote on Friday concerning the erosion of freedom of speech worldwide, take a look at this headline from yesterday’s Daily Times in Pakistan: “Pakistan to ask EU to amend laws on freedom of expression.”

The word “ask” in the above headline should be in quotes. Note the not-so-subtle threat  that I’ve highlighted in bold:

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will ask the European Union countries to amend laws regarding freedom of expression in order to prevent offensive incidents such as the printing of blasphemous caricatures of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) and the production of an anti-Islam film by a Dutch legislator, sources in the Interior Ministry told Daily Times on Saturday.

They said that a six-member high-level delegation comprising officials from the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Law would leave Islamabad on Sunday for the EU headquarters in Brussels, Belgium and explain to the EU leadership the backlash against the blasphemous campaign in the name of freedom of expression.

They said that the delegation would also tell the EU that if such acts against Islam are not controlled, more attacks on the EU diplomatic missions abroad could not be ruled out.

Sources said that the delegation would also hold discussions on inter-religious harmony during its meetings with the EU leaders.

Perhaps a more accurate headline would be: “Pakistan to EU: Rethink that whole ‘freedom of speech’ thing…or else.” And I’m sure the Pakistanis are sincere in their desire to improve ”inter-religious harmony” — it’s a lot easier when the other religions are banned by law from saying anything critical of Islam.

I am sure this will all get worked out when Barak F. Obama flies over there, hat in hand and sits down with them. This should be a wake up call to anyone who doesn’t believe these people are out to destroy our way of life.

Alex, as a student of Middle East studies, it’s funny you would pick freedom of speech as a topic. As you know, there is no such thing in the Muslim world. As you may or may not know since the PD refuses to report any of it, but both Mark Steyn in Canada and Michael Savage in San Francisco are being attacking by CAIR and other Muslims groups trying to get them to stop talking about Muslim extremists.

I find the censoring of this information very disturbing. The PD would fight for freedom of the press, yet they are the worst censorers ever.

1. The Western Tradition (the Hebraic-Graeco-Roman tradition and culture) has been viewed with suspicion by the cultural conservatives around the world, even in the West by our own cultural conservatives.

2. The current wave of ultra-conservative Islamism, is based in tribal and cultural traditions that have been anti-thetical to the Western Tradition. Such folk seek to justify themselves by appealing to Islam, but they are no better than the good Christians who used to appeal to the Bible to justify slavery.

3. The irony is that in the Golden Age of Islam, it was due to the efforts of Muslim scholars and the protection of the Jews in diaspora, that much of the Western Tradition was preserved. In fact Islamic scholarship in that era was much higher than anything in Europe at the same time.

4. The real problem is that the dominant political philosophy in the Middle East was and is Fascism. The irony is that it was the Germans and French for the most part who taught them that during their colonial era. What the leaders have done in order to maintain power is to wed this to Islam.

However, more than bombings of embassies or businesses, or even outright war, the one thing that will destroy the Western Tradition, including the Declaration of Human Rights, etc., will be responding in fear and suppression to these threats in order to be “secure”.

Mr. Mayer, I saw your piece “Oh, Canada” in the paper today. Obviously I missed your post last Friday. You are a shining light of truth at the Post-Dispatch and hope they keep you on as a news writer. The PD news dept. has shamefully not reported any of this nor the case against Michael Savage. Here is a link to info: http://michaelsavage.wnd.com/?pageId=47

As the most “removed” blogger from the PD blogsite, I find that the PD is also engaging in the removal of “freedom of speech.” I have been removed by simply mostly informational websites. No doubt the PD will whole-hearted endorse the Fairness Doctrine to get right wingers removed from talk radio, all the while their editorial page is allowed to spew propaghanda from the left without factual basis. If the Fairness Doctrine does get enacted, it had better include TV stations and newspapers too.

The extreme left is slowly eroding our freedom of speech in this country and it is a crime.

I had to look out the window to see if pigs were flying by. An editorial blog post critical of Islamist bullying? In the Post-Disgrace? By a Post writer?

God love ya Alex. You will do well.
