Hail to the chief?
I happened to be on campus at Webster University Tuesday evening when I noticed something that seemed — to me, at least — unusual.
President Barack Obama was addressing the nation. Students were clustered around a television set inside the lobby of the Sverdrup Business/Technology Complex, watching raptly. There was no cynical counter-commentary and very little apparent texting. They were paying attention.
It was a far different sight than what I remember from my college years at Syracuse University. If we were gathered around a TV during those years, you can be pretty sure it was showing SU basketball. Even among journalism students, watching a televised presidential address (Ronald Reagan was in office) was strictly optional.
I sometimes hear from friends who teach college classes that kids today after different — more focused and serious — than we were back in the day. I didn’t get a chance to ask the students Tuesday evening, but I’d be interested to hear what you think.
Does Barack Obama get a different reaction on campus than George W. Bush did? I can’t imagine kids clustered around TVs to hear Bill Clinton. Is it charisma, or fear of recession? I’d particularly like to hear from any college students out there.

John G. Carlton is an editorial writer who covers health care, science, the environment and public utilities. Before joining the editorial page, "Doc" was the newspaper's medical writer for four years. He has also worked at newspapers in Connecticut and New York. He's fond of heavy sarcasm and light anti-tank weapons. He lives in west St. Louis County with his wife, Martha Madigan, their daughter Ana and an overly enthusiastic Australian Shepherd dog, Savannah.
It should be clear to you John, it’s not charisma, there is great interest in the imminent bankruptcy of our country from printing money to wallpaper Board Rooms at Goldman Sachs and Citigroup honoring Robert Rubin, Henry Paulson and Timothy Geithner. Also, generous amounts to pay back election debts to labor unions and George Soros.
These kids must feel like a poor nephew at an expensive dinner with a rich uncle who stiffs them with the bill. They better pay attention.
All Hail Obama. He is our King. Long live Obama. Hail Obama! Hail Obama! Hail Obama!
Love the guy or hate him, there is an attribute that I suspect appeals to the kids: he’s not old. Think of how long it’s been since that was true - Kennedy, I guess?
I am repulsed by everything Obama stands for. But, the typical field of aged “it’s my turn” candidates (Dole & McCain come to mind) are a real turn off - before you even get to their ideas.
They were no doubt gathered around the tube hoping to hear something - anything! - that might allay their growing realization that their energy, youthful idealism and gullibility were exploited in the perpetration of a carefully crafted and expertly executed socialist con.
After becoming seduced by the intoxicating ether of “hope and change,” they woke up the next morning to find that their wallets were missing.
………………The students wee probably watching him on Tuesday because they missed him a few day earlier on 60 Minutes, and missed him a few days earlier than that on Leno.
I’ve heard that he might be making a cameo appearence on the Saturday afternoon infomercial for the Ronco Kitchen Rotisserie.

Geez, more faux outrage
As a fairly recent college grad, a few thoughts:
Young people today are probably more attuned to political affairs than in previous years because, for the first time in a long time in this country, we do not expect to be better off than our predecessors.
We, the Millenials, have watched our parents, the Boomers, squander America’s greatness. Through greed, arrogance, and blind adherence to ideological orthodoxy, the Boomer generation has ruined this country. We the young people will have to pay, pay, pay for the crimes of our parents. Gee, thanks.
Just to go to college, we have to borrow hundreds of thousands of dollars, only to realize it won’t get you particularly far. We’re paying Social Security taxes for our aging parents–who are gleefully collecting–when we have absolutely no assurance that we too will receive assistance.
The crazed right-wing Boomers who so happen to constitute about 95% of the posters on P-D blogs love to blame Obama for the consequences of their own beliefs and policies. Decades of irresponsible tax cuts accompanied by brutal cuts in social services have left us a nation in bankruptcy, with collapsing infrastructure, obscene education and healthcare costs, and a potential environmental catastrophe. Gee, thanks.
And don’t call us “socialists.” For one, those of you do obviously do not know what the word means. In any event, we reject the dogmatic mulishness of our parents in favor of a realistic pragmatism that will actually move our country forward. No one likes taxes, but how else do you expect we pay? Print more money? Borrow more from China? Ha.
So yes, maybe we are a little more attuned. We don’t have the luxury not to be. We’ll be alive and footing the bill for the crazed orgy our dead parents put on our credit card.
Gee, thanks.
Steve, sorry to hear you hate your parents. Apparently they did a lousy job. I asked a recent Mizzou grad if he knew what Fascism was. He hadn’t a clue. Perhaps your anger should be directed towards the universities that lie to you about history and the world so that you will accept socialism as a good ism. Your new president’s answer to the recession is to triple the debt to be laid on your generation and you have no problem with that. Odd! I hope it all works out well for you.
Dear “Centrist”,
As an individual holding a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and history, in addition to a juris doctorate, I can tell you I know quite well what both fascism and socialism are. Perhaps your Mizzou chum was a business student? (In his defense, it is a complicated idea with no one clear definition.)
I don’t hate my parents (very cute, by the way, but I suppose casual insults equal reasoned rebuttal in your world), but I am angry with the overall irresponsiblity that characterizes their generation. Face it, their parents, the “Greatest Generation”, left them with the most prosperous and powerful country in human history; what are the Boomers leaving us?
Yes, Obama’s plan will mean even MORE debt for me. I am not happy about that. But something must be done. I am not completely convinced that it will work, but it’s a start, and surely a better alternative than “let’s just cut taxes even further, abolish the SEC, FTC, inter alia, and trust the people who got us into this mess to get us out.”
What did history teach you, sir? Look to the behavior of the ruling elite of the 1920s and you will find striking, disconcerting similarities to the plutocrats of today. We could use an FDR, and, again, for the record, I wholeheartedly reject socialism.
