Media, sexism and an open thread

At an event to honor her earlier this week, Katie Couric lambasted the media for its alleged sexism regarding Hillary Clinton. And last night, she used her “Notebook” segment to continue the theme. She didn’t name names, but she made reference to Tucker Carlson and his infamous “crossed legs.” Watch the video here.

I didn’t see rampant sexism, but I’ll admit that I wasn’t primed to look for it, either. I did wonder about Hillary Clinton’s campaign staff saying she had more cojones than Barack Obama. A supporter said she had “testicular fortitude.” Perhaps these comments stem from our culture finding power only in manly attributes. That’s sexist itself, but I doubt the Clinton campaign believes that to be true. And, it’s probably more representative of loose language than misogyny.

Do you agree with Couric? Was the media sexist toward Hillary Clinton? If you think so, please provide concrete examples.
And if you read the headline, you know this is an open thread. So talk away. It hasn’t been defined here, but an open thread is a space for people to talk about whatever they want. Nothing is off topic in an open thread; it’s a way to bring any issue to the table.

In regards to Metro’s Child Poverty story today, I have a few questions for you Democrats. One, do you think it is possible that the desire for increasing the minimum wage has possibly caused the loss of low-income jobs? It’s funny how the Democrats are jumping on the rise in unemployment, yet is it possible that the minimum wage increase is a factor?
Two, Sen. Obama was just in town and raised $l mill from generous Democrat contributors at $2,300 a pop. Wouldn’t it have been nice if someone had asked Sen. Obama to donate those funds to all the children’s charities in town who are so in need of funds? Where are all these Democrats with all this money when we have such a local need for charitable help? I mean, it’s not like Obama isn’t going to win anyway regardless of how much money he raisea. Heck, NBC (no Barack criticism) alone will see that he is elected and with assistance from the print media and that’s all free. Is it really that necessary to raise such a ridiculous amount of money? He is currently around $300 million. And that doesn’t even include what George Soros and others are donating to the 527 groups.

Carol Size,

You are not making much sense.

Why are you picking on Obama because oof the ungodless amount of money that is required to run a Prseidential campaign?

Well, the one thing you must give Obama credit for is his insight in how to do just that without being bought by big money and lobbyists.

Carol Size makes very good sense. There are plenty of jobs out there. Mexicans are taking many of them because other people have either not qualified themselves for the trades or don’t like working for a living. Good for the Mexicans. My favorite was a trackhoe operator named Carlos, who could probably have scratched his back with the bucket and not got his shirt dirty. He was pretty good with a cement trowel too, and spoke two languages. How many of us can do that?

Is Katie Couric supposed to be representative of the “unbiased media”? If so, God help us.

I just watched a video clip of Keith Olbermann’s “Worst Person in the World” segment from last night. He named Katie Couric. Quite funny, regardless of where you stand on the issue.

Watch it here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/25107481#25107481

During the democratic primary races the whole emphasis was on Mr Obamas communication skills and Ms Clintons toughness and experience.
The real question is ,”wheres the beef”. Seldom were these candidates
questioned about the specifics behind their programs, like what they might cost.

Senior citizen:

No, not news tips. Merely entertainment.

Thanks, though.

I don’t think the media was sexist to Hilary Clinton, but I also don’t think that’s the real source of Couric’s ire.

I suspect that Obama stole all of the star treatment that some, perhaps including Couric, thought would sweep Ms. Clinton into the White House.

I also think it’s hysterical that anyone from a TV network has the stones to do any ‘lambasting’ over candidate coverage during the primaries.

It was the most digusting ’softball’ game I’ve ever seen, and the general election campaign coverage is likely to be even worse.

I suggest voters plan on doing their own research, and take media commentary with a healthy grain of salt, because instead of reporting objectively they’ve picking their favorites and trying handicapping the race all along.

‘Obysmal’ & ‘McLame’, and now I have to VOTE for one of these CLOWNS.
