On the list: St. Louis is a great place to buy a house

Forbes magazine looked at cities all over the country to find the best places to buy a home. Houston, San Francisco, Atlanta and St. Louis all made the top 10.

Yes. St. Louis.

I love St. Louis. I don’t mind the summers, it doesn’t take long to get anywhere and it has a great newspaper.  I have a friend who frequently puts down St. Louis, and when he does, I remind him of the airport with its departing planes and the highways that lead out of town. Now, I’ll also remind him that Forbes loves St. Louis. And not just for the pizza. (Or despite the pizza; whatever.)

Last week, Family Circle magazine named Webster Groves one of the best places to raise a family. Now Forbes recognizes the glory of St. Louis.

This is what Forbes said about St. Louis:”St. Louis is a great place to settle because it’s not overbuilt and is reasonably priced relative to income. Thanks to the attractive cost of living, many large corporations–including brewing behemoth Anheuser-Busch and financial heavies Stifel Nicolaus and Edward Jones–call St. Louis home. With a family friendly culture, and a steadily appreciating median home price of $145,400, the “Gateway to the West” is a great place to buy a home.”

Friends who moved here from Minnesota were amazed at how “freewheeling and bohemian” St. Louis people were compared to the more uptight, restrictive and rule-oriented Minnesotans. Both sides of my family have lived here since the 1840’s and I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. The only place I have like as well was New Orleans.

Before air conditioning, many St. Louis families went to Michigan or New Hampshire to escape the heat. I didn’t spend a summer in St. Louis till I was 19. I don’t mind the St. Louis summers too much now since I live next to Forest Park and the greenery cuts the heat a lot.

This is funny. How many will actually but a house in St. Louis proper? I’m guessing few. We call ourselves “St. Louis” when it’s convenient to do so but in reality someone from Chesterfield, Ladue, Town & Country, etc would never say they live in St. Louis when speaking to a St. Louisian.

Why can’t we just merge city and county and be done w/ it?

BTW, I live in St. Louis proper.

Thanks man, that’s always annoyed me. Why is “I live in Chesterfield” so hard to say? And merge the City with the County? City people probably wouldn’t want all the county’s coming problems with home foreclosures! ;)

I remember my grandfather going to meetings and giving speeches in the early sixties for the Borough Plan. I remember that he was particularly disheartened that the city rejected it too.
